North Beach Pizza guide

Haight Ashbury

North Beach is also known as Little Italy. Many Italian immigrants built this neighborhood into the Mecca for Italian Cuisine with restaurants like Fior d'Italia and Cafe sport. North Beach is a great place to walk around and just browse. It's sidewalks are lined with cafes, restaurants and interesting shops. This area was also made popular by the Beatniks of the 50's. Great Beatnik hangouts that are still around today like Vesuvio's Bar are worth the visit. If you are lucky, famed San Francisco bartender Jack Perkins might be working to pour you a pint and engage you with the local banter.

Main North Beach attractions include Coit tower, Lombard Street and Washington Square/Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Once you have toured North Beach and have worked up a hunger it's time to get some pizza. These are my recommended pizza restaurants in North Beach.

            Tommaso's 1042 Kearny St (415) 398-9696. (Map)
            Enrico's Cafe 504 Broadway (415) 982-6223

            Liguria Bakery 1700 Stockton St (415) 421-3786(Map)
Golden Boy Pizza 542 Green St (415) 982-9738 (Map)

Tommaso's  wood fired brick ovens bake Neapolitan style pizzas by the dozens in this busy pizzeria. Booth seating in this basement cellar location makes this place fun and reminiscent of the old days. Originally opened in 1935 under the name Lupo's it still servers the same Pizza recipes.

Enrico's Sidewalk Cafe is a great place on a warm sunny day. Sit on the patio and "people watch" try their Italian style pizza from their wood fired oven. Enrico's has live music at night and is a hang out for the Hip artsy crowd amongst others. This restaurant originally opened in 1959 and was revitalized to it's current state in 1992 by it's former manager Chris Johnson. If you want to try a pizza that would satisfy the hunger of any Dharma Bum try Enrico's.

Liguria Bakery is a focaccia shop opened in 1911 and is now run by the Son and Grandson of the origanal owner. They still have the same focaccia they have been serving all along. This is one place where you buy your lunch to go. On the corner across from Washington Square It's a great lunch to eat in the park.

Golden Boy Pizza is another good place if you want "to go" Sicilian style slices. It does have a long counter that you can sit at if needed, but I like to grab a slice and walk. The pizza is Sicilian style which is about an inch think crust cut in square slices. This place is punk. It looks like a place that would have been cool in the 80's and it was!
